This was a great way to end a day of hiking on the Whitney Trail to the top and at 12,000 feet, the night sky was spectacular. I knew 3 AM would come quickly, but I had to get a shot of the Milky Way while the conditions were extremely favorable--clear skies, no lights, at 12,000 above sea level, and very dark. I didn't anticipate how difficult setting up for the shot was going to be. Waiting past hiker's midnight (9:00pm) was an exercise in patience for me, but well worth the wait. By the time I returned to my tent, all but a few campers were fast asleep, resting for the ascent to the top of Mount Whitney. The stars were truly out after midnight.
