Location
This was taken close to the little-known rural outpost of Lategansvlei, in the Calitzdorp district of the Klein Karoo, South AfricaTime
While traveling along this gravel road with a close friend we stopped at an old ruin to have a light lunch next to the road. It was about 12:30 when we saw Petrus Goliat with his two dogs approaching on the dusty road. We offered him something to drink and started a conversation, after which he allowed us to take some photographs.Lighting
Although it was in the middle of the day, the sky was overcast, providing us with a beautiful, large softbox in the sky. No other light, reflectors etc. were needed.Equipment
I used my trusty Nikon D800E with the Nikkor 24-70mm f2.8 lens - there was enough light to photography without restriction and the need for a tripod. I used an ISO of 250, fstop of 4.5 and speed of 1/320sec.Inspiration
I love to take photographs of people living in the areas i travel too. Petrus, a descendant of the Koi people (first inhabitants of South Africa), displayed such rich character and honesty in his face that i just had to photograph him, but informally without any instructions and while I was talking to him.Editing
I used Lightroom CC Classic to do the B&W conversion, using very basic editing adjustments to enhance the texture of the skin (very modestly) and B&W filters for the skin tones. In my camera bag
I use a Nikon D800E with the trinity Zoom lens set (14-24, 24-70 and the 70-200mm f2.8 zooms). Also the 105mm Micro, 85mm f1.8 and the 200-500mm f5.6 Nikkor zoom. I use the Nikon SB 900 speedlight and a Sigma 530 Super speedlightFeedback
When photographing people while you travel I firstly try to befriend them and show honest interest in their lives, family, lifestyle etc. Only after that I would ask for permission to photograph them. They are then almost always more relaxed and open, willing to show their character without pretense and to share about themselves. It is not always possible to do this and language can often be a barrier, but my experience has always been that the chances of successful photographs are so much better.
