This photo was part of a series of photos of a girl and her horse. The shoot was done at the stables where the horse is kept.Time
We started around midday, getting the horse curried and dressed. The model was getting ready at the same time. We eventually started shooting at around 4pm that afternoon, with the late afternoon sun lighting the subjects from behind.Lighting
I prefer having the sun behind my subjects when shooting outdoors, and filling from the front with a reflector or other light source. With this photo, the back lighting just gave it that something extra.Equipment
There was not much in terms of equipment. Just my trusty old Nikon D750 and Sigma 85mm Art. Oh yes, and a battered old reflector.Inspiration
This was a concept thought out by the girl's mother, who's an artist and painter. She wanted a series of photos that she could print and transfer to canvas.Editing
Very little, to be honest. I removed the groom from the background and added a slight colour grade to the image. A few small adjustments later we have this image. In my camera bag
Usually I have the following: My Nikon D750, Sigma 85mm Art, Nikkor 50mm f1.4 G, reflectors, two speedlights.Feedback
I knew a fair amount about horses going in. I would suggest studying horse behaviour before hand, because they can be quite tricky (but very rewarding) to work with. This horse is a warm-blood, and can be very skittish. So no flashes at all. Or sudden movements. Everything had to be done in full view of the horse, slowly, and with his permission. Otherwise you put the girl and others in jeopardy. Rather safe than sorry.
