This was a boudoir shoot I took at this young lady's home. We were fortunate that she has a large, lovely house with lots of room and light. We went from room to room, just seeing what we could do in each room.Time
This was mid morning, at the end of summer here in South Africa. The day was quite warm, and walking around the house with very little on was the order of the day, lol.Lighting
At first I tried natural back light only, but the room ended up being too dark, and the sun coming through the curtains just wasn't strong enough. I used two speed lights; one outside the window on full power, and another inside the room as a fill light. Much of the light is still the ambient, but with the two speed lights as "kickers", so to speak.Equipment
I don't have much in terms of gear; a Nikon D750 & a Tamron 24-70mm f2.8 VC. What an amazing combo. I use two Yongnuo flashes, and a set of HSS triggers from the same company. I don't even own a tripod. I do have some gels, but opted not to use them here, as this was always meant to be a B&W shot.Inspiration
Not inspiration, really. Just myself and the model hitting a really nice groove. We were just flowing so nicely on the day, and when I saw this room it was just a shot both of us saw being done.Editing
Oh, not a heck of lot. I did some frequency separation on the skin and smoothed out some discolouration before the B&W conversion. Lifted detail from the shadows, contrast adjustment and some dodge and burn to finish it off.In my camera bag
As I said before, I don't really have a lot of gear. Right now, there's a Nikon D750 & a Tamron 24-70mm f2.8 VC inside. There's also two Yongnuo 568ex speed lights, a set of Yongnuo HSS triggers & another set of backup triggers. Batteries, memory cards and my gels for the flashes. That's about it.Feedback
Know your light. Know how to add to it and subtract from it. Also know your subject - we shared a moment over a cup of coffee and a doughnut before the shoot. Connect with your subject and know how to pose them. Boudoir photography for male photographers is always going to be difficult and fraught with possible mishaps, but having clear communication before hand and being able to direct the subject without physical contact will really help you.
