Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken from the private dock of a Villa on the island of Providenciales in the country of Turks and Caicos. This was a beautiful Villa right on the water, facing west.

Time

This was taken in the last hour before sunset. Facing west for the week, which let me have a ton of opportunities to take amazing photos like this.

Lighting

As per usual in the Caribbean, the weather in January fluctuates from rainy to sunny almost every day. This day, it rained at night and gave us a beautiful light show during the sunset.

Equipment

Canon 6D Mark I Canon 40mm STM Monofoto Tripod No other equipment was used

Inspiration

We were staying at the villa for a whole week. Since we were facing west, that allowed me to take sunset photos every single night. With so many opportunities, I just happened to get lucky and have this dive your boat stop to watch the sunset directly in front of our dock.

Editing

Yes, definitely some post-processing. All done in Lightroom. Mostly darkening the shadows to bring out the definition in the clouds and sea and, separately, lightening the boat itself to draw the eye into it. There was some additional saturation added, but not much. The sky was so beautiful I didn't have to do much.

In my camera bag

I usually have minimal amount of gear with me. I have a Canon 6D Mark I, Canon 40mm STM, and a Rokinon 14mm 2.8. I have a Speedlite on me in case of taking some portaits, and a few different filters in case I get to do some long exposure shots.

Feedback

The lighting, the ship, the colors: pure dumb luck. I had been taking sunset photos every night for a few days before this. Having the practice of what lighting I could expect allowed me to be ready to get the shot when the time came.
