Behind The Lens

Location

My daughter brought me some flowers...wow....! But because I am me, I can't only be happy with some flowers in my livingroom, I simply HAVE TO take some photos. So I did. Put one of my macro lenses (40mm/2.8) on my beloved Nikon D7200 and the party could start. I took a bunch of pictures but this one you can see here caught me at once.

Time

Afternoon. It was a sunny (sic!) afternoon in february this year. Took the flowers, brought them ion my terrasse and tried several angles to catch light and those wonderful colours of the lily - as always: Many ways lead to the right decision.

Lighting

Natural light. I do not use artificial lighting, only in very very rare situations - for example while taking still life etc.

Equipment

Nikon D7200, Micro Nikkor 40mm 2.8. Nothing else. Photo was taken freehand

Inspiration

Oh....to take macro photos I don't need no special inspiration or reason or stimuli....I see flowers, I see the light, I see the colours - that 's enough. The motif leads me to the way I should take th photo. It is also a type of try and error.

Editing

I used lightroom ( and ONLY lightroom) to smoothen the picture, did a bit on contrast and temperature - ready. I always try to show the motif as natural and real as possible - but of course I do as much as I (!!) need to be happy with my photo.

In my camera bag

My Nikon D7200, Sigma 18-250mm lens, tripod, infra red remote, accus, microfibre cloth - when I walk around in nature or zoo or the city...in the night or to catch the sunrise. To do indoor photos I additionally have my Micro Nikkor 40mm 2.8, my Sigma Macro 105mm 1.8, some spotlights, cable remote, some water in a spray bottle (for placing droplets on flowers etc.) and some backgrounds (only black or white) with me.

Feedback

Keep your eyes wide open for the beauty of small things and/or details. Be sure, you have the right kind of light - best is always natural light, because it's warm and soft. Try different angles - sometimes something shows up boring when you take it from above - try to show from down under - or diagonal....don't hesitate to make another photo and still one another.....maybe you see a "boring" photo on your screen and suddenly it is IT - because as you took it you didn't see the ant or the ladybug that sunbathed on one little leaf - and voilá! That's it. Try, try, try and try again - don't give up, because one day you'll catch that little bug or the perfect light or the wonderful shadow you will love.
