Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken from a beach called "Log Cabins" on Oahu's North Shore. Log Cabins is not as famous as the nearby Bonzai Pipelines, but has a similar barrel wave break.

Time

Mid-afternoon

Lighting

To achieve a satisfying post-process, it is best to capture a high contrast image, so it helps if the sun is out and not diffused.

Equipment

Sony A7rIII with 100-400mm lens, Feisol tripod.

Inspiration

Surfers are incredible risk takers but can also be very introspective, so when I saw the combination of a pensive surfer with a large wave framing him in the background, I knew I had a nice story to capture.

Editing

Yes, I cooled down the temperature to suggest a later time of day, and extensive vignetting to draw the viewer to where I want them to go.

telephoto zoom, wide zoom, standard 50mm
