Location
This composition was captured at the Lanai Lookout in Oahu, Hawaii.Time
Taken at sunrise.Lighting
There are many colors to experience at the beginning of the day. The most interesting light in my opinion happens about 20 minutes before sunrise. Unfortunately, I was having problems with my camera setup on this day and was only able to capture at sunrise.Equipment
Sony A7rIII, Feisol tripod and wide angle lens.Inspiration
I've always admired this location from the photos of others online. I usually don't think of Oahu as a place for such great landscape compositions, but I would have to say this place is one of the state's gems with regards to a strong composition location. I like how the foreground pool leads out to the rising sun, and it is one of the few places on the island where this happens.Editing
I do general processing to bring out the definition of the water, and to darken (vignette) the sky. I also like to bring out some of the highlights in the foreground rocks as accents to emphasize the first rays of light invading the scene. In my camera bag
Camera, two lenses (wide and telephoto zooms), tripod, and solid neutral density filters. I rarely use graduated NDs anymore due to the amazing dynamic range of Sony sensors.Feedback
The parking lot to this location has a lot of signs posted warning visitors not to go beyond the parking area out of safety concerns, and there is often a police officer stationed here to reinforce that warning. Visitors go at their own risk and good hiking shoes are strongly recommended...there is a lot of 'slip rock' in the area as well. As a photographer, the risk of being swept out to sea during normal conditions are minimal to moderate...the risk of slipping is greater. During storm surges, respect the ocean surf and don't turn your back to the ocean...perhaps consider it when the swells calm down.
