This is something you don’t see everyday at a movie theater – a wine and beer bar alongside the Pepsis, Ghirardelli chocolates alongside the Milk Duds. And it’s good beer and wine! The Tropic Cinema is totally Key West both in its inception and history and it operation.
Tropic Cinema specializes in historically important, experimental, avant-garde, and Art House films. The Tropic supports independent cinema and the filmmakers who create it. It wants to bring in the best, smartest and most creative independent films every week. AND it’s nonprofit!
The Tropic Cinema opened in Old Town Key West in 2004 with a simple idea: to bring quality movies to people, more than Hollywood Blockbusters. But it’s sure to show all the movies up for an Oscar and there’s a big party there on Oscar night. Key West’s artistically diverse community likes independent films, foreign films and the classics.
What started as a small 2 screen nonprofit theater became to a 4 screen multiplex. It has a modern Art Deco design to represent the landscape of contemporary film and thinks of itself as a community center. The Tropic not only has great movies, but also hosts concerts, political forums, lectures, private parties and even weddings!
Each theater is named for a different person of the arts. A lifesize statue of Marilyn Monroe guards the entrance.
