Location
This photo was taken during Harborfest 2017 while on performing safety patrols with the Coast Guard and Coast Guard Auxiliary.Time
Saturday evening is a fireworks show, the largest in the region. This was taken earlier in the show before too much smoke blurred the view. We had been on the water for 5 hours already and still had a good 3 hours till we returned to dock.Lighting
The blue on the hull is from a police boat near by, the white lights are from the pier the DDG was moored against. I set WB to flourescent due to all the dock lights that over powered any other lights. The fireworks burst was a slightly deeper blue.Equipment
Canon 7D Mk1, Canon 24-70 f4, ISO 1600. Hand held on a 20' cuddy cabin boat.Inspiration
I love long exposures and fireworks, just see my page to see the abundance of low light photos and lighthouses. As a member of the Coast Guard Public Affairs I am always on the lookout for images that express the missions of the USCG. We happened to be in the right area of the harbor during a nice burst of fireworks, so I took the shot, not chimping or checking any settings outside of what I had preset before the show based of experience of previous years.Editing
I did some noise reductions, reduced the brightness of the lights, lightened up the hull. USCG rules state that an image cannot be excessively post processed outside of minor edits to exposure, contrast, and cropping, so no spending hours in Lightroom or photoshop. 90% of of my photos are with minor to no edits at all.In my camera bag
Depends on the shoot. Usually my 7D mk1 and/or 1Dmk2, 70-200 2.8L, 17-40 f4, 24-70 f4. If I'm doing astro I'll bring along my 50 1.2L and Irix 15 2.5. Usually have a flash on hand.Feedback
Timing is everything, this shot can only be done on the water by official vessels as recreational boaters were required to be moored in anchorages during the fireworks. There are tons of boats, including the permanently moored USS Wisconsin that provide other backdrops to the fireworks, just make sure you get there early to get a prime spot.
