Behind The Lens
Location
This photo was taken just outside Hemsworth in West Yorkshire, UK.Time
This was at sunrise, the sun was very low in the sky behind me, illuminating the rape and the telgraph pole. Behind the shot were some very ominous looking black clouds as a storm was brewing in the near distance. The scene was changing very quickly due to a strong wind and quickly moving clouds and only a minute or two after this shot was taken the sun disappeared behind a cloud and the light was gone.Lighting
The low sun was very bright behind me and, being the golden hour, the light was yellow which made the yellow of the rape flowers really 'pop'.Equipment
I used a Canon Rebel T3i (600D) and a Canon EF/S 18-200 zoom lens that I always carry with me in case a good image presents itself. Aperture f/5.6, ISO 100, Shutter 1/125, Focal Length 70/1Inspiration
I passed this spot on my daily commute to work for over 6 years and I always thought that there was potential for a good photo here. I've seen this view in bright sunshine when the crops were green and the sky was blue and although it was nice I didn't think it had anything special. On this particular day the light and the clouds came together for only a few minutes. Distracted by the view, I almost crashed the car trying to find somewhere to stop! I managed to get around 5 shots before the light changed and the shot was gone.Editing
No, there was no post-processing except for a crop to get closer to the rule of thirds and straightening of the horizon since it was taken hand-held.In my camera bag
I always carry my Canon Rebel T3i (600D) and a Canon EF/S 18-200 zoom lens wherever I go. I also keep a "Lee Big Stopper" and a remote release because I like to get creative with long exposures. I also carry a flash and an EF/S 50mm 1.8 prime lens because I like the bokeh that the large aperture gives.Feedback
This sort of shot can't be planned. If you know of a location that looks like it might have potential then it's worth re-visiting in different waether conditions. Not all scenes are suited to sunshine and blue skies and storm clouds can add a real sense of drama.
