I recognised that immediately! I have a shot of it somewhere in my archives, alas it was back when digital was new, and I travelled the S.I. for a year but only with a 3.2 mp Nikon Coolpix. Nice image!

It is a cool place. I am so lucky to live on the West Coast here as there are so many interesting places to visit with a camera.

Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken at Roa, an old mining area on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island. The sub tropical rainforest is a good backdrop and a contrast to the strip maintained for the sheep.

Time

It was a very grey damp morning and I was unsure what photo opportunities I would find. This is a place I have visited several times as the clouds and the rainforest can create a moody shot.

Lighting

The lighting here is one of the things that attract me to this location. The clouds hang over the sub tropical rainforest and the gaps in the clouds occasionally let light through illuminating different parts of the scene. Although the gap in the cloud has led to an area of overexposed highlights it shone well along the grass and middle ground which I found pleasing.

Equipment

This was shot on a Canon EOS 6D with a Canon EF 24-105 Lens. Although I had my tripod with me I rested my camera on a fencepost as I had to balance on a narrow strip of grass above a culvert to get this angle.

Inspiration

I had visited this location previously and found the opportunities to get something worthwhile in grey rainy weather good. It is a remote area with some mining ruins and lone trees as well as this very photogenic cabin/shelter. It is ideally suited to HDR treatment so what better to do on a rainy saturday. When I arrived and saw the sheep by the shelter I felt very lucky as I believed it would add that extra element to the scene.

Editing

Yes. I merged photos in HDR Efex Pro 2. I then used Lightroom to further enhance the image by pushing the black clipping to the left and slightly increasing vibrance, saturation and highlights to balance the effect from the black clipping.

In my camera bag

I almost always have more than I need. On this occasion I was using a Canon EOS 6D. These days I use a Canon EOS 5DSR, though I also carry my trusty Canon EOS 6D. My go to lens is the EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens. I never go without my Nisi ND1000 black glass, it has opened up so many more options on trips, particularly with so much water in the local landscape. I also carry Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM, EF 16-35mm f4L IS USM. A canon EF 8-15 f/4L Fisheye and an EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L also make the bag on occasions. I also carry at least 2 spare fully charged batteries, spare card, cleaning cloths and a remote shutter release. I use a Gitzo carbon tripod with a ball head.

Feedback

Do not be put off by the rain. I would say that at least 2 of my "Top 20 picks" have been taken in the rain, 2 more would feature thundering waterfalls, which also need rain. Watch the changing light and take lots of images. Always take at least 2 potential HDR shots. Revisit these at leisure, you may have a gem. When you find your subject move around and find the best angle (there are multiple shots from various viewpoints taken at the same time as this). If you are aiming to get moody HDR then pay attention to cloud texture - HDR enhances this very well. Above all get out with your camera and enjoy.
