Behind The Lens

Location

I was visiting my friends in CA and they were gracious enough to take me to the San Diego Zoo to the Safari Park.

Time

I saw her doing this and couldn't resist taking her picture. She looked like she was praying. The photo was taken around mid day. It was very hot but these gorillas were such a joy to watch.

Lighting

Some of the lighting was difficult because of the enclosure. In some places it was extremely dark and in others the sun was very bright. I just had to wait for her to move into the right area.

Equipment

I used my Nikon D3400. Handheld and no flash. I don't like to use a flash around any animals. I feel that it scares them and it is also not good for their eyes.

Inspiration

The inspiration for this photo was just the pose itself. Plus as we were watching her she was also taking care of her little one and making sure he was staying away from the edge. So I did a lot of "following" and snapping pictures before I chose this pose.

Editing

I know I cropped this picture and brightened and lightened it but other than that not anything too drastic.

In my camera bag

It depends on where I'm going. I'm from MI so for the whole trip to CA I took all of my lenses (5) tripod and all of my cleaning supplies. Plus my laptop. But the trip to the Zoo I took a smaller bag and packed my Micro lens a long distance lens and wide range lens.

Feedback

My advice is to take pictures of everything and anything because you never know what you may capture that turns out to be really fun, beautiful or just plain interesting. I take many pictures of the same thing because you never know which one might just be "the one".
