This image was captured on the trail leading down to Cedar Falls in the Hocking Hills State Park in Ohio. What started out as a hobby eight years ago, has become a passion. I enjoy finding those small moments of stillness and freezing them in time.Time
As eager as I was, to get down this trail to the rushing waters of Cedar Falls, I could not pass up enjoying the silence, serenity, and beauty of Mother Nature. This moment in time was frozen on March 8, 2016, at 3:34 pm.Lighting
Being mid-afternoon, even under the canopy, the sun was intense, yet, the trees created the perfect filter, lighting each step. Only the natural light provided by Mother Nature was used.Equipment
This image was captured with a Fuji FinePix S9950W, fixed lens, 7.7mm at f4.1. No other equipment was used.Inspiration
My husband and I visit Hocking Hills State Park at least twice a year. Our favorite times are in the spring and fall. We were walking down this trail to Cedar Falls, when the stillness and beauty of the area struck me. The two of us were the only ones on this trail, everything was calm and still. The only sound was the water fall this trail leads to. I stopped him mid-step. He stood there quietly while I captured this moment. When we began walking again, he just sighed, shook his head, and smiled at me. Not only is this image one of my best, it is also a reminder to me that some of the most precious moments in life only last a second.Editing
I really enjoy the post-processing aspect of photography. It allows me to delve deeper into my creative side. With this image, it was already almost perfect to me. I added a bit of warmth and contrast, and brought up the saturation level on the greens just the slightest. I finished it up with a small amount of dark vignetting to make the sunshine on the steps pop.In my camera bag
Every hike I take, I make sure my bag has my Fuji FinePix S2 Pro with a Nikon 70-300mm, 4-5.6 lens and Nikon 18-55mm 3.5-5.6 lens for waterfalls and nature shots that require patience or long exposure. In my hand, I carry my Fuji FinePix S9950W Fixed, 50x zoom lens, for capturing images in the moment. And in my back pocket, I have my Samsung S5, for those perfect selfies letting everyone on social media in on my adventures as they happen :)Feedback
Hocking Hills State Park, near Logan, Ohio, has several amazing places to visit for nature photographers. Not far from one another is Old Man's Cave, Ash Cave, Cedar Falls, Cantwell Cliffs, Conkles Hollow, and Rock House. The walking trails at Ash Cave and Conkles Hollow are handicapped accessible, so everyone can enjoy the area. Because most of the area is under a canopy of trees, or in gorges, having the sun high in the sky has always been the best time of the day for me to take photographs. I know it goes against everything learned, but if you go too early in the day, the sun hasn't had time to light up the areas and by the time Golden Hour arrives, darkness has already taken over under the canopy. Be sure to wear proper walking/hiking gear, especially if you take the trail from Old Man's Cave to Cedar Falls. Even in the height of the summer the gorges remain cool. There are so many trails to hike and so much nature to explore. Take your time. Enjoy every moment. For me, it is a photographers dream.
