This image of the Rainbow Bridge between Canada and the U.S., was captured from the Observation Deck at Niagara Falls, New York. As I am learning to become a better photographer, I have found being in nature to be therapeutic. The great outdoors has become a second home as I hone my skills.Time
This image is a delightful memory of my honeymoon. The weather that day was impressive for mid-October. My husband and I decided to go up to the Observation Deck to see if we could get a better look at the Horseshoe Falls, but instead, this wondrous sight met us as we stepped onto the deck. This moment was captured on October 13, 2011 at 1:53pm.Lighting
Mother Nature provided the ideal lighting that afternoon.The clouds yielded just enough cover to filter out some of the harshness of the sun, creating a fantastic balance of light and shade.Equipment
In my hands that day was a Fuji FinePix S2 Pro camera, with an 18-55mm f3.5 Sigma Lens and a tripod. No other equipment was needed.Inspiration
As my husband and I stepped onto the Observation Deck, I looked to my right and was really awestruck by how beautiful all those fall colors looked surrounding the bridge. It seemed they continued on forever. Yet, in all that beauty, here stood an incredible feat of engineering. The lines and shape of the bridge, mixed with the colors of nature and light coming through the clouds, was a moment I could not pass up.Editing
Post-processing for some can be rather stressful. For myself, I find it quite cathartic. I find a peacefulness in working on an image to make it an expression of myself at the moment. On this image, I applied a Lomo effect, brought down the exposure one step, brought up the highlights a little and added a stronger feathered vignette.In my camera bag
I make sure my bag has my Fuji FinePix S2 Pro with a Nikon 70-300mm, 4-5.6 lens and Nikon 18-55mm 3.5-5.6 lens for waterfalls and nature shots that require patience or long exposure. I also carry my Fuji FinePix S9950W Fixed, 50x zoom lens, for capturing images in the moment. And in my back pocket, I have my Samsung S7, for those perfect selfies letting everyone on social media in on my adventures as they happen :)Feedback
Landscape photography has its ups and downs. It may take forever to find the ideal spot, but when you do, you are able to capture exactly what it is you went out to find. And sometimes, you may be looking for something entirely different when an ideal situation pops up on you. Being up on the Observation Deck, it was a little windy. Thanks to a sturdy tripod and those couple minutes that the wind let up, I was able to capture this moment. Bring along a remote for your camera or set it to a very short self timer. When wind is already a factor, you do not want to add to the camera vibration. Bring a weight for your tripod, you will need something to help hold it steady. They say, "Patience is a virtue.", and no one knows this more than a photographer.
