Alex, the way you captured this U.S. Marine in uniform is absolutely stunning! Makes me think about my own Marine son. I come back to this photo often to just appreciate what the uniform represents and also what the man in the uniform has given up for everyone else. Congratulations on your awards...well deserved. This is an image that our country needs to see now more than ever! Our freedom has come at a very high price.

An excellent capture of the mood of the marine in b/w. It is humble. This is a winner.

Location
This photo was taken at a make shift studio in my friend's house in Newport, RI.Time
This photo was taken inside with some external lighting so the time of day wasn't too important, but I think it was taken around 1pm.Lighting
We were looking to set up the lighting for this shot to look as dramatic as possible. We used a single strobe light with a soft-box to get a nice gradient from dark to light. The strobe was placed on the rght side of the subject slightly in front of him. On the left side of the subjects face we set up a black scrim to absorb any extra light from reflecting back into his face. We then placed a muslin backdrop a couple of feet behind the subject to create a completely black background.Equipment
This was shot with a Canon T2i and a Canon EF50mm f/1.8II lens. We also used the strobe light and a sync chord for the flash. The photo was taken with the following exposure settings: f/11 | 1/80s | 100 ISOInspiration
A good friend and I had been working at a local restaurant/bar when he told me that he had some old strobe lights from his previous career in photography. We decided that it would be fun to bring in some of the employees and local patrons from the bar and shoot portraits of them. The Marine in this photo is one of our regulars who worked at the Navy base in town. He was kind enough to wear his formal dress while sitting for us.Editing
This photo was originally shot in RAW and was slightly processed. After converting it to B+W, I added some slight sharpening and edited slightly for contrast. In my camera bag
Almost all of my camera equipment was recently stolen while I was traveling in Chile and Argentina for a couple of months. Since then, I have upgraded to a Canon EOS 6D. In my bag I also keep my Canon EF24-105mm f/4L and Rokinon FE14mm f/2.9 Ultra-Wide lenses. I always have a cheap filters (UV, polarized, neutral density) and a trigger trap so I can hook my camera up to my phone.Feedback
Just ask people if they are willing to sit for you to take portraits. (Offer them beer in exchange!) Most people are willing to do it and any chance to shoot is a chance to learn. The nice thing about studio portrait photos is that they don't have to rely on natural light and you can shoot and experiment for as long as you like!
