Shot towards the end of my morning shooting, this scene caught my eye. The tree looked so dramatic against the dark sky. At first I was disappointed by the sky, my intention was to shoot the rocks and the bridge of Bastei in the morning sun rays, and so I thought that I'll have to come back home with nothing. But then I wandered around a little and found this tree. There is a fence which I had to climb in order to get to the spot to avoid a bridge right above the tree. I shot it with a fisheye lens to get more rocks to the picture, which would lead an eye to the tree.
Never give up and explore the area around you. You can always head home.

Behind The Lens

Location

Saxon Switzerland National Park, Germany

Time

At sunrise.

Lighting

Natural light. Tripod and timer to reduce any camera movements.

Equipment

Nikon D7100, Nikkor FishEye 10.5 mm. Tripod, no flash, IR remote control to avoid camera shaking.

Inspiration

I was trying to catch the sunrise the last day I was visiting the park but on that day I was very unlucky to witness overcast sky. I did my shooting which I wasn't very fond of and towards the end when I was almost walking away, I noticed this tree growing out of rock. A true survivor. I thought about the best angle for a moment, had to climb over a dance with all my gear to get closer to the tree and to the rocks to get that feeling of being there. The rocks on either side really help put a nice perspective. I set a camera and did few shots of the tree. This image is the one I think is best.

Editing

I shoot all my images in raw to have as much detail in the file as possible for post. I edit my images in Adobe Lightroom. I bring out the detail in shadow, darken the sky a bit and see if filters needed on any part of the image. I also bring out the colors a little bit. In general I always try to edit image so it would resemble my experience and help the viewer to get the same feeling. I also try not to exaggerate with colors and keep pictures as natural as possible.

In my camera bag

Camera, lens, gps device, tripod, remote.

Feedback

Don't give up and always look around. There is always something worthy of photographing. The harder you look the more unique your image will look.
