Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in a field out by my house. I was trying out my new 70-200 lens

Time

End of the day. I always shoot in the last two hours of daylight.

Lighting

I just love the end of day light. There soft light and the long shadows make for some beautiful photos. I'm not a good morning person so I choose to do most of my shoots later in the day. Sometimes I have clients that want to shoot early or there's no available sessions so I'm forced to get up early and shoot. But it's not a preference. I'm a night owl working late in photoshop.

Equipment

I used a 70-200 II IS L lens on a Mark III 5D

Inspiration

I was just out in the field with my daughter trying out a new lens. When I go to take photos, even if it's testing such as this was, I'm always conscious of color I made the head wrap on my daughter because I love to see color around the face and hair it really draws people in and makes a photo pop.

Editing

I do tons of post processing in Photoshop my background is in painting so it's really important for me to find an image. I see all the images I take as a canvas to which I'm going to paint on.

In my camera bag

I have two Mark III 5Ds, it helps so I don't have to switch lenses in the middle of a shoot. It's a lot more to carry around however. For lenses I have the 16-35 wide (used mainly for real estate photos), the 200 F/2 L, the 70-200 II IS L, 24-70 L, and the Sigma 50 Art Lens. For Flash it's the 600 canon. I use a tripod for real estate but when I'm shooting families it takes too much time. I find people get very impatient when waiting for periods of time when shooting families and kids. You have to keep the session moving.

Feedback

I'd say photography is patience and perseverance the more you practice and work the better you get at it. Today you not only need to understand all that goes with shooting but you need to understand photoshop to really make your photos pop. There's so many cell cameras out there that people think they can do what we do. But when you present work that makes people feel something then there's no comparing for people they will want what you do. I also don't prescribe to the notion that you should just do one type of photography. Many pros will say just do newborn or weddings etc. I say get out of your comfort zone and try different things. You'll get better at shooting if you come at it from different avenues with a different perspective. I shoot The Nutcracker every year and I've learned how to shoot people leaping in the air with very little light. This year I shot Ice skating boy oh boy is that a different ballgame. Eventually I would like to just create art photography and be able to combine everything I've been learning to create images that speak about things I feel important about but in the meantime I have bills to pay ( all that equipment) and Ice skating lessons so the personal art will have to wait.
