Location
The school of dance in my hometown is housed in a renovated brewery. Last spring, they held an open house to showcase their dancers. The limestone walls with deeply inset windows was the perfect stage to showcase the pensive beauty of this ballerina.Time
It was an overcast afternoon that painted dark shadows over the masonry.Lighting
Simple portrait lighting left dark shadows on the dancers neck. One large reflector from below brought up the shadows nicely.Equipment
This was shot with a Nikon 3200 and a Tamron medium zoom.Inspiration
The stark and industrial architecture enhanced the delicate beauty of the dancer and her costume. Stepping to the right, created the long lines of the right leg, and allowed me to capture the moodiness of the dancer's face.Editing
The black and white filter deepened the emotion of the image, and simplified the composition. In my camera bag
I shoot with a Nikon 7200 most of the time, and my go-to lens is the Tamron 18-200 mm. "Little worlds" are everywhere, so I also carry my old 3200 with a Nikkor 150mm prime in my bag for a Macro-emergency. Weather is my friend, so a weather resistant sleeve is always in my bag.Feedback
My favourite shots are of people caught in moments of pure joy. Over time, I am learning how to make models feel comfortable and give me the same playfulness and sense of delight that is best captured spontaneously. With models however, you have a release in hand and your images are free to be used as you wish.
