Behind The Lens

Location

This summer, for the first time since I was a child, I visited the lazy resort town of Grand Bend, Ontario. I wanted my children to appreciate their rural roots, and see the farm where their grandfather had been raised, and which was now being farmed by my cousin.

Time

Leaving the family in their beds, I rose early, just as the sun was coming up.

Lighting

Heading out of town, not far from my family homestead, I spotted a golden field awash in the early morning light.

Equipment

Anchoring myself in a ditch, I decided against a tripod and instead opened wide the aperture. Crouching low, my hope was to capture the detail provided by the sun splashed highlights and deep shadows.

Inspiration

I wanted to play with the depth of field I could capture with my new lens. The field of wheat was almost monochrome to a casual observer, but with the right tools, I could focus on the rich textures and varied hues of this bland palette, and show the viewer something spectacular.

Editing

I am a novice and simply play with the levels of my raw images to achieve my vision.

In my camera bag

My camera was chosen for me as a gift from my husband. I think he picked it because the camera body of my Nikon D3200 is red. My essential lenses include a Tamron wide angle zoom for every day use, a 35mm for mostly shots with people, and a telephoto that I find works best with a Speedlite flash. I often use a tripod and remote when I have the luxury of time. This spring I was caught off guard by a sun shower, and was delighted to shoot in the rain for the first time. Since then, I keep a professional grade camera sleeve close by to alleviate any worry I have about soaking my camera.

Feedback

Get up early, challenge yourself, and find an alternate point of view. And of course, enjoy yourself!
