Behind The Lens

Location

Isla Mujeres, a small island in front of Cancun, in the Yucatan Peninsula, during the summer.

Time

It was around the 2:00 PM. It was the afternoon before the night in which the storm tropical ernesto was supposed to break down on the island. I was there with my tripo made of magnesium and carbon fiber, petrified, waiting for lightning to strike it and kill me. When the sun broke for a short second through the clouds I've shot a rapid sequence of photos, then I've picked up my gear and began to run. Just some seconds after not one but three lightnings hit the zone. The adrenaline discharge has been incredible, but the result is worth the risk. Btw that night Ernesto hit the Island with rain, strong winds and a lot of noise.

Lighting

I've enriched the colors and the contrast to underline the incoming hurricane sensation, but believe me, it was really frightening

Equipment

For this shot I've use a Nikon D800, a Nikkor 24-70 f/2.8, a B+W polarizer filter, and a Manfrotto 190CxPro4 tripod.

Inspiration

The weather on a tropical island is constantly changing, and during the summer, august, is one of the best season to capture them. Storms and clouds usually, give some stunning and incredible sunset over the caribbean sea, and it is pratically impossible to resist to their charm.

Editing

The photo is an HDR done to get the most of detail for the clouds, then I've applied some color corrections to obtain the strong tones.

In my camera bag

Nikon D800, Nikon D810, Nikkor 16-35 F/4, Nikkor 24-70 F/2.8, Nikkor 70-200 F/4, TC20III, a Manfrotto 190CXPro4 Tripod and 20x 32Gb Memory cards and some hard disks. Yes, it is really heavy to carry.

Feedback

As I said, the islands in the oceans are the best places where to find big storms on the sea; check when is the rain season, go there, and prepare to have patience, surely something spectacular will happen. It happens almost every day. But stay far from lightning storms!
