Location
In Milano, Italy, the night of the Milano in the Cage 2014 an MMA competition with international athletes and fighters. Out of my comfort zone, I'm a landscape photographer, then I had my challenge too.Time
Was night, indoor, on a ring. Obviously no natural light but lamps, a lot of lamps.Lighting
The ligt is the one available on the ring. It is difficult to use a flash in such situation because the action is fast and the light has no time to recharge, then high ISO and short times. Thanks to the sensor of the Nikon D800 the rumor has been heavily reduced.Equipment
I've used a Nikon D800 with. Battery back to have long battery duration and a secure grip on the camera body, a Nikon 14-24 f/2.8 and freehand because I was jumping on and off the ring, then a tripo wasn't possible.Inspiration
I've been invited as official photographer to the event and I was curious, and scared, about how I performed as an action photographer, because I'm mainly a travel and landscape shooter. Then I've passed days in learning how to shoot fast action scenes and watched tons of other photographer photos.Editing
As post processing I opted for some enhancements of the definition and the shadows, all done through Apple Aperture, then DxO Film Pack helped me in obtaining the warm tones of the skin and the gloves. To complete a pass of DFine removed the remaining rumor on the photo. In my camera bag
nikon d800 and now a nikon d810 in addition to avoid to continuously swap the lenses, a 24-70 f/2.8 a 16-35 f/4 and a 70-200 f/4 are my main lenses, a sigma 15mm fisheye for when I like to have fun, a manfrotto 190cxPro4 tripod and a polarizing filter.Feedback
The only advice I can give is to stay close to action, the more close you are more incredible instants you can grab. I've shooted everything in manual mode, messuring the zone where I predicted the action was about to happen. Due to my usual kind of photography I'm not used to shoot in any priority, but I'm really quick in setting up the camera. And eventually, practice practice practice and some luck!
