Behind The Lens

Location

I am frequent traveler for work reasons. Incidentally, my career is not related to photography. I am also an MTB enthusiast so 3 passions are put together: travel, biking, photography. This time work took me to Buenos Aires, Argentina. More precisely, in Puerto Madero, one of the rebuilt areas with reminiscences of a great era of maritime business and bonanza exports.

Time

Early afternoon. I walked to recognize this area with a great contrast of modern construction and renovated warehouses. And it was a very nice day mostly cloudless, and bright.

Lighting

What can I say, the day was beautiful. However there is construction to the left throughout the corridor and produced shadows over the corridor and this part was not affected by the construction. I spotted this from the other side of the dock! so I ran before the shadows went more to the right.

Equipment

This was shot with a Nikon D800 and lens AF-S Nikkor 24-70/2.8G ED. Nothing else

Inspiration

I wanted to capture the contrast of modern facilities and the past "tools of the trade". These cranes are not in use anymore. So I wanted to express it in a perspective with the past upfront and modernity in the background. I shot this "normally" in color, but always had in mind this could look better in B&N

Editing

Of course I did. I used PS, converted into B&W and did some contrast and sharpening. At the end (I am not that skillful with PS) i realized that it resulted in a resolution of 72 ppi, when originally it was 300. Anyway, i think it ended as i expected. But more importantly, I liked it.

In my camera bag

When I am not in the bike it is the Nikon D800, the the AF-S Nikkor 24-70/2.8 as my prime. Also a Sigma APO70-200/2.8EX, a Sigma teleconverter 2x DG, Tokina SD 12-24 (IF) that was originally for DX cameras but works great with FX, a Manfrotto 7301 tripod, a Nikon flash SB 600. When biking, only the camera and the 24-70.

Feedback

Usually, the days are very bright in the southern part of the hemisphere. However Buenos Aires may be very changing due to weather conditions so I suggest to check the forecast the day before so you can be prepared. After processing the picture I thought I should have used a polarizer, but honestly with this camera it was not necessary.
