Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in the Li River at Xingping, in the Province of Guangxi in China.

Time

I took a lot of shots. I remember the guide/subject of the picture, a fisherman of the region, picked us up around 4am, then sailed along the river for an hour or so until we reached the location picked by him .... excellent place indeed, and practically no set up except his gear and the boat ... and the cormorants, of course. The picture was taken on 3/31/2018, between 5:30 and 6:30 am

Lighting

I wanted to capture the essence of the typical Chinese fisherman scene, with the mountains .... I tried to choose the best moment playing with the sun break, guessing where it was going to appear, and hoping the clouds and fog would scatter without disappearing, so I had to play with different settings, speed, aperture, bracketing. Clouds all of a sudden dispersed, sun cam abruptly, so had to adapt .... took time and patience.

Equipment

This was taken with a Nikon D800 and nikon 24-70mm f2.8, tripod Manfrotto BeFree.

Inspiration

This was a leisure trip, with the purpose to take "Travel" pictures. I did not know this place even in pictures before, it was suggested by my agency. So I tried to imagine how this could be, had some conferences and then decided on 2 locations, once in the afternoon of the day before, and this one for the morning (well, 5 am morning). When the fisherman picked us up, it was a very clear sky, full of stars. When we reached the location, it was cloudy, and foggy ... as it was clearing, my expectation increased due to inspiration of the day before ... I think it was worthwhile

Editing

I do simple post processing as I still don't master Photoshop.... but I used it for color balancing, a bit of dodging, a bit of more exposure, but a very simple post processing

In my camera bag

Usually i take the D800 with the 24-70mm f2.8. If traveling then it comes with a Samyang 14mm f2.8 and a Sigma 50mm f1.4. But when there is a chance I also bring a Sigma 70-200 f2.8, a Sigma 105mm 2.8 Macro, tripod and some filters, specially ND's, a GPS.

Feedback

Dawn and Dusk conditions vary very fast. Add to it if it is a clear sky or it is foggy, cloudy, etc. Be prepared for changing conditions, checking wether forecast in advance. Practice fast changes in ISO, aperture, speed and bracketing, check your screen and histogram after taking pictures, as you may consider useful to take more shots with different settings
