So when the baby bear cubs were in my backyard along with Mama bear who was only slightly past my sliding glass window, the brown cub stood up and put his paws on the glass of my siding glass door so he could peer in . Of course you don't want to do anything that will startle the cubs because Mama bear is right there and could very easily rip off the door and come in. The light in the family room was off so I didn't dare turn it on in case it startled the cubs. I had to do the photo from the back of the family room on zoom with no flash through a sliding glass door that hadn't been cleaned so hence, the poor quality. Better to have a poorer photo and live than go for a great photo and end up up close and personal with Mama bear.

Thank you. You learn to adapt to them. Put it this way, I never turn my back to the greenbelt when I am in the backyard. I also try to be noisy if I have to go into the greenbelt so that the bears have the heads up. Most times bears are shy and will run away if you clap your hands or make noise. It is just if you startle them that you would have a problem.

Behind The Lens

Location

We live at the base of a bluff with our backyard backing onto the small greenbelt. This greenbelt is a natural corridor that the animals use to go to the river, which is only 2 blocks away. With the loss of habitat due to urban development, more and more animals are being crowded into this natural corridor. At first we never saw that many animals in our backyard, but as time has gone up there are more and more animals using it. In this case, I was standing at the far end of my family room with the lights off when a Mama bear and her 2 cubs came into my backyard. The 2 bear cubs came right up to my sliding glass patio door. Mama bear was just 2 feet away.

Time

IT was before noon and the sky was overcast with clouds

Lighting

Because of our backyard being at the base of a bluff, the sun does not make it over the bluff till about 1pm so the back of the house is shaded. The light in the family room was off and the sliding glass door glass had lots of fingerprints became complicating factors since Mama bear was just 2 feet away from the cubs. IF I turned on the lights or used the flash, I was afraid that I would startle the cubs and Mama bear. The sliding glass door is less than a 1 inch of glass, meaning that it did not offer much protection if Mama bear became angry.

Equipment

The camera that I use is unique because it is a secondary feature of the HDC-TM90 high definition video camera that I use. I am fascinated by animal behaviour in the urban setting and do a lot of nature filming. Although a picture is worth a thousand words, it does not tell the whole story of what is going on. I know many cameras can take video, but I was not happy the quality of the videos so I have opted to use HD video camera. As with any camera, the secret is learning the maximum ability of your camera and finding ways to compensate for what it lacks.

Inspiration

I viewed this as a once in a lifetime photo. Because of Mama bear, the lack of lighting, and the fingerprints on the glass door glass, I knew that the caliber of the photo was not going to be great. Safety was definitely an issue. IN the end, I could not pass up this chance which might never come again and decided to live with the poor quality of photo vs startling Mama bear. I made the right decision.

Feedback

Safety is always paramount when filming wild animals either in the wild or in your backyard. We all want that perfect once in a lifetime shot, but not at the cost of your life or the Mama bears life, especially in the urban setting. Although most black bears are shy of people, you can not always count on that.
