I took this photo and a whole series of other photos when visiting an Ice Castle/Palace in New Hampshire.Time
We were exploring the caverns of the ice palace on a snowy afternoon.Lighting
I used the ambient light. Nothing elseEquipment
This was shot with a Canon 5D Mark III. I held the camera in my hand and used ambient light. I used a Tamaron 28-300 zoom lens. While I have the equivilent Canon lens, it is too large and heavy to be practical for me to use when I don't have a tripod.Inspiration
This Ice Castle/Palace was truly like a fairy tale. It took us a good while to figure out how it was created and maintained. The softly falling snow just added to the wonder. I made many photos of my friends in place and other photos of the ice formations.Editing
This photo was shot in color, though it came out rather monochromatic and originally it did not have a person walking out of its opening to the outside. In one of my other photos, my friend in the puffy coat was walking away from where I was standing and I took a picture of him. As I was looking through the series, I thought this photo needed a point of reference to convey the depth of this path from the interior to the exterior. I copied the man from its photo and added it to the opening of the corridor, adding shading to emulate the man's shadow and his indentation in the snowy path. I also sharpened the photo and adjusted the light in post process. Both photos were shot in raw.In my camera bag
I rarely use a "bag". My camera with its Tamaron telephoto lens fit into my backpack purse. If I think I might want a light, I bring my LumeCube.Feedback
I am still at the beginning of the learning curve with regards to composite photography. Done well, it should be not be detectable unless that is the desired effect. For this photo, I was striving to create what would look like a photos shot.
