Location
This photo was taken in a fabricated ice cave in northern New Hampshire.Time
We arrived at about 2 pm and left just before dark. I made photos inside the many corridors and outside the caves.Lighting
Since these were artificial caves, the makers included strategic lighting for safety. The entrances and exits also provided daylight a small distance into the caves.Equipment
I used a Canon Mark III, 5D and a Tamron 28-300 telephoto lens. I had neither a flash nor a tripod with me.Inspiration
I am almost always prepared to catch an interest or beautiful scene. The ice caves were a new and interesting experience so I made many photos. I was there with my friends and shot photos of them on the caves.Editing
This photo is a composite. This shot originally was of one of the exits. It was nice, the light on the icicles was interesting, but the scene had no focus. I thought a person walking through the opening would create interest and perspective. I "cut" one of my friends out of one of the other pictures and pasted him into the photo. Then I created shadows under his feet and on the snow and adjusted the exposure and brightness in the photo he blended with the photo and looked like he belonged there. This was my first composite, so I know I did and redid many other adjustments, but I honestly can't remember those details.In my camera bag
If I am planning to make photos, I have my Canon Mark III, 5D or my Canon R5 with either Tamron 28-300 orCanon 24-105 zooms. Unplanned photos are taken with either my iPad or now, my iPhone 13 pro.Feedback
When I made this photo, I had no idea whether I could effectuate my vision. My best advice is to keep learning and keep seeing what is in your mind, before you press the shutter.
