Behind The Lens

Location

The picture was taken at the top of Klakkur mountain on the Faroer islands where I stayed for almost two weeks in May 2018

Time

I hiked to the top of the mountain a few hours before sunset and stayed there until the sun disappeared behind the horizon. The image was taken just before 10 pm.

Lighting

The image is taken on manual mode with a large depth of field. I counted on the high dynamic abilities of the camera. No filters were used. The exif is ISO400 and f/11 with a exposure of 1/125 sec

Equipment

I used my Canon EOS 5D mark IV with a Laowa 12mm f/2,8 zero-D. The camera was placed on a Gitzo Traveller tripod and triggered by self timer

Inspiration

The view from this mountain top was amazing and the light truly magical. The combination of clouds and sunlight was all that I could wish for. I wanted a self portrait on that place, as a reminder but also to have the human element in the picture. Fortunately the sunset was in the right place.

Editing

Post processing was fairly simple. I lifted the shadows and pulled down on the highlights in Lightroom and added local contrast in Photoshop. A little bit of saturation was added.

In my camera bag

Besides the EOS 5D mark IV I use a EOS 1Dx and a range of lenses from 16mm up to 400mm. I love using longer lenses in landscapes and I use those a lot. But for shots like these a wide angle is the best you can have. Therefor I took the 12mm I normally use for nightsky imaging.

Feedback

Be careful. Going there is no problem, but returning can be tricky. The twilight can hide the dangers of walking down the mountain sides. Always have a flashlight with you and if possible go with two persons. But on the other side; if you don't take a little risk, you'll never be rewarded with these stunning views. But be carefull (again), because no matter how beautiful the scenery or picture can be, it's not worth a life.
