Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the Vasco the Gama Bridge in Lisbon Portugal. one of the longest bridges in the World. An icon for any photographer.

Time

This is certainly one of those shots that I will remember forever. It was about 5am. I was in bed awake, not really thinking about anything, and certainly not thinking about photography. But as chance would have it, I couldn't sleep and so, tired decided to get up and why not go and take some photos of the sunrise. I didnt even check the waether forecast apart from knowing it wouldn't rain and that i'd have about 60 minutes before sunrise. My bag is always nearly ready, so it was a simple case of getting up, getting my bag and tripod and heading driving 25min to this spot. On arrival, I laughed as many others must have had the same problem sleeping as me as all the normal spots were taken. So i decided to walk a bit and found myself a new spot not normally sought after, but as the tide was just right it allowed me to get close to the water. Fortunately we had high clouds with openings so just maybe, i thought to myself, we might actually get a reasonable sunrise.

Lighting

I set my tripod, picked out a small rock in the water as my foreground, high clouds, openings and warm weather created the perfect sunrise. Its always good to arrive well before the sunrise so as to ensure proper set-up of equipment and test shots.

Equipment

A 3 ND grad filter and a 1 nd gradient filter is my normal set-up. nothing fancy as i Love to keep the shot as original as possible. Camera set to a long exposure, trigger to ensure a steady shot and a sturdy tripod to keep it all together. My trusty canon 60d, wide angle Tamron lens and camera set to f/20, ISO 100, Shutter 29sec, and lens to 10mm.

Inspiration

This is an iconic bridge that has the added advantage of being just in front of the rising sun. Its been a spot i've visited many a times before but as nature would have it, sunrises can be unpredictable. This time i managed to pick out a new spot, mainly forced to pick one, but actually so glad that I managed to move away from the norm and make the most of a new situation.

Editing

Obviously we all do some post processing, even if its just converting the Raw format to Jpeg. Some additional colour toning was used to create some additional drama, but albeit, the photo came out mostly as is. I always crop in camera and try to get the shot as perfect in camera as possible, so fortunately very little else was needed. except taking as many shots as possible, just before the sun flared into shot.

In my camera bag

My bag is normally always prepared, just in case. So I carry as much as possible. My camera, in this case my canon 60D, lenses, normally my 10-24 Tamron and 24-70 Tamron. Batteries, several memory cards, cleaning cloths and duster, as working near water can has its own challenges in keeping equipment clean, particularly in windy or even rainy days. I always have my tripod lock clamped to my camera (learned from experience as once I took my tripod for a shoot but forgot the clamp. Since then always srewed to my camera, that way I know I have it)

Feedback

This was one of those totally unprepared shots. I normally plan well ahead and check forecasts. But this just goes to show that sometimes the most important thing is to make the most of what we have. Not to expect to much. In this case mother nature blessed me with one of the most beautiful and stunning sunrises I've ever had the privilege to witness. I didn't expect anything but I got beauty in return.
