I actually took this photo in my backyard. I live on beautiful Lake Keowee in South Carolina. I do a lot of shoots on this lake. I love to take my clients out to one of the lake's islands via jet ski or boat for our shoots. It never hurts to have some fun while working.Time
On this day, we started shooting around 4pm and it happened to be sunny with clear skies. It sounds great and all but its actually not the best conditions for a photoshoot. So to get away from the harsh sunlight, we decided to shoot next to my dock where it provides some nice shade.Lighting
One thing I've discovered while using the lake for photoshoots is that the water doubles as a reflector. The sun bounces off the water and can create some wonderful and interesting results. Also, I love incorporating sun flares in my shots. It took some practice learning how to shoot backlit subjects to get that beautiful glowing sun flare, but once I learned, it has become one of my favorite ways to use light.Equipment
Interestingly enough, this day I was shooting with my Nikon D7100. My mom, Julie, had wanted to learn the basics of photography so she actually assisted me this day to get some first hand experience. The D7100 is a great camera for learning. Throughout the shoot, id explain to her what we were doing and why. It was a proud day having my mom there and actually getting to teach her something for a change.Inspiration
It was wonderful having my mother there to assist me and getting to teach her about my true passion in life. But what topped it off was that the model in this photo is actually my sister, Brittany! I wanted to add some new shots to my portfolio so after months of bugging her, she finally agreed to model for me. I've always thought she had the most beautiful, big blue eyes and her face is every photographers dream. She's not a professional model but she should be. She knows her angles and rarely did I have to give her direction. Brittany truly inspires me in more ways than one. She's not only a beautiful face, she's a wonderful mother, friend, and soon to be wife!Editing
Using Lightroom, I made simple adjustments to bring out her features. I didn't do much at all actually but I did adjust some general settings (white balance, shadow-highlight ratio, saturation, etc.). She has such beautiful skin already, but I did go in with the Brush Tool and softened up her t-zone. And finally, I used the Adjustment Brush to add clarity and sparkle to her eyes.In my camera bag
I have to admit, my camera equipment gets it's fair share of bumpy rides while in my jet ski front compartment. Even though I use a waterproof pelican case, I try to invest in gear that wont curl up and cry for its mamma when I push it too far. My go to camera body is my Cannon 5D Mark II. As far as lenses go, I always bring along my Cannon 50mm f/1.8 (for $100 its one of the sharpest lenses I own) and my favorite all around lens is my 24-105L. And lastly, I must give a nod to one of my favorite tools, the good ole trusted and very simple... Canon Wireless Remote. As someone with insanely shaky hands, its a must for me if I want to get crystal clear shots.Feedback
I absolutely love shooting portraits and I've accumulated some tips and tricks over the years. If you want to get a similar shot while incorporating a body of water, there are a few things to keep in mind. Firstly, make sure you have a strong waterproof camera case. Its important to protect your gear. Also, pay attention to the location of the sun. If your shooting on a lake or river, it can be hard finding shady areas and the sun can be pretty harsh. Try to choose a day that's overcast or even raining for that matter. Shooting in the rain can produce some really unique images (just don't forget to use something to protect your camera). Here's a trick that I actually used for this particular shot... use a noodle! You can't tell but my model, Brittany, is sitting on a noodle to help her float. If your shooting in the water, use anything you can to help your model out. They will thank you. And lastly, use reflections! Shooting on water has many advantages and this is just one of many. Incorporating reflections into your photos will add a different perspective and it leads the eye to more areas of your image. So... if you want to have some fun while working and create more interesting shots, I highly recommend a lake day photoshoot. And don't forget your sunscreen...
