Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken while walking around a small pond in Winter Park, Colorado. There was a dirt trail that wound through the surrounding fields.

Time

It was mid-morning, probably close to 11am. I typically don't like to shoot mid-day but it was overcast, and had been raining on and off all morning so there was a rich freshness to everything.

Lighting

The clouds did an amazing job diffusing the light from the sun. This allowed me to shoot without having to worry about where the sun was coming from. I personally did nothing special to the light.

Equipment

This was shot with a rebel t5i and 18-135/ 3-5.6 lens with a CP filter attached.

Inspiration

I really loved the texture of everything. The clouds by themselves would have looked amazing and I loved roughness on the fence. I didn't expect this photo to turn out as well as it did, but it just reaffirms my belief to shoot everything and sort it out in post.

Editing

I needed to process the Raw file twice, once to get the fence and grass properly exposed and once to get the clouds. Once I had the two photos I merged them using layer masks and a gradient tool in Gimp.

In my camera bag

For this trip I only took the Canon t5i and the kit lens with the cp filter. We spent a lot of time hiking and walking and I'm not a gluten for punishment, so lighter was better

Feedback

Shoot everything and find any viewpoint other than the average human eye level. I didn't expect this photo to turn out as well as it did but I'm glad I stopped to shoot it as it's been one of my favorite photos. I also took the time to shoot this scene at a few different heights from ground level to standing.
