Location
This photo was taken at Norah Head on the New South Wales coast, Australia. As well as being very photogenic, it is also a great surfing spot.Time
This was taken around 6am around sunrise. It was the second morning in a row I was there as the day before was all overcast and sunrise was not visible. It was a short drive from where I was staying and is a very easy walk to.Lighting
The day before did not have the lighting I was after and I knew the composition I wanted so I just had to rely on the clouds getting in the right position and time the exposure right to get the effect of the waves moving. I had to experiment here with a few different shutter speeds but knew as soon as I saw the waves in this photo that I had got what I wanted.Equipment
I used a Canon 6d body and Canon 17-40mm lens along with a tripod and shutter remote. I also used a small rain cover to protect the camera from the ocean spray.Inspiration
I used to visit the beach here to swim but never realized how good a spot it was to take photographs until I moved away. When I was back it was on my list of places to get and I was very happy with the result. I now live in Canberra, Australia with the nearest coastline 2 hours away so whenever I am near the coast I try to take the opportunity to get some pictures as there are so many possibilities to take shots.Editing
Yes, this photo is two exposures, one exposed to get the water movement and the other exposed for the sky and sunrise. I used lightroom to make basic adjustments to both photos and then used layers in photoshop to blend the two photos, improve contrast and sharpen key areas. I then used color efex pro to improve the vibrancy and contrast. In my camera bag
I use my Canon 6d, Canon 17-40mm lens, Canon 50mm 1.4 lens and Canon 70-200mm 2.8 IS II lens. I have a remote shutter, tripod with ball head, Tiffen polarizing filter, a Lee big stopper, a rain cover, head lamp and microfiber cloth to wipe of the water on the lens.Feedback
I have learned about from photography from magazines, books and you tube. Some say that to capture world class photos you have to go to world class locations. While there is some truth to this I believe this should not limit you trying to capture great images wherever you live. Great light can occur anywhere but you have to be out there to find it. I am focused on landscape photos but all types of photography have something to offer and learn from so that is what I will keep trying to do.
