Behind The Lens

Location

This photo is taken in the Algodones & Imperial dunes area in California. In the Imperial dunes part, the location of this photo, there is a lot of OHV recreation, so it was a challenge to find dunes not scarred by the vehicles. The Aldones part on the other side of the road is open for hikers, OHVs are not allowed to drive there. However, we did not go there because the dunes were not as spectacular.

Time

I remember we tried to leave somewhat early and we arrived at the dunes before 09:00h. It turned out to be early enough to still find some pristine dunes.

Lighting

It had been very windy the night before, so we hoped to find some nice unspoiled dune-scenes with ripples in the sand. With the sun low, I hoped to get some contrast in the ripples, and as it turned out, this worked out well. The 2 persons walking on the top of the dune were a nice extra touch.

Equipment

I used the D300 camera with the 18-200 lens, nothing else.

Inspiration

I always look for a change to photograph ripples in dunes, preferably combined with lines on the top of the dunes. I simply love them!

Editing

The original was a bit to light, and I wanted to boost the contrast to better bring out the ripples. So I corrected this in Lightroom.

In my camera bag

D300, lenses: 18-200mm and 10-24mm, sometimes tripod, ND filters, or polarizing filter.

Feedback

Normally it is best to visit these kind of places somewhat early in the day or late in the afternoon. Some wind, the more the better, will remove foot steps and vehicle tracks, which is nice. Ohterwise, you have to walk, there is always a chance that unspoiled landscapes can be found further away. Take care not to be run over by an OHV.
