Location
This image is one of the iconic views on a campground in Joshua Tree National park in California. To get this shot you have to lie on your back, close to the tree. The juniper and the rock are several meters apart, the rock is a lot bigger that the try. On your back you can position yourself so that you can see the tree "kissing" the rock.Time
We planned to spend the day in Joshua Tree. Around midday we reached this place. Around 12:30 we took the first set of shots, after some exploring we returned around 14:30, hoping that the light would be better. This was not the case.Lighting
The scene is side/back lit, with very hash light. So I tried different ways of lightning methods: both matrix and spot metering methods and even ia small flash on the tree. In the end both matrix and spot metering resulted in about the same result. Some postprocessing in Lightroom was needed to brighten up the shadows..Equipment
D300 and 18-200 zoomInspiration
Actually this shot is not very original, you can find it everywhere on the Internet. It is interesting in terms of preparation, Joshua tree is a big park, research on the web and google/bing maps is needed to find the place.Editing
As said, I did post processing in Lightroom to lighten up the shadows. In my camera bag
Normally I carry a D300, 18-200 zoom and 10-24 zoom, and some neutral density filters. When needed I take a tripod.Feedback
From studying this, I for myself hope to recognize scenes like this. Doing what other people already did, makes you learn about your equipment and recognize scenes
