Behind The Lens

Location

Garland, Nebraska Known to the locals as the Bohemian Alps and the Rolling hills of Nebraska formed by Glaciers thousands of years ago!

Time

This image was captured around 8pm just as a storm hit our tiny local town of Garland I made my way up to my favorite local tree and hill hoping to catch some great shots of the lighting from the storm. It turned out being pretty amazing. I just sat in the rain taking shot after shot of this tree and the bolts of lighting striking the ground. Not knowing if I would get hit I really didn't care. If I died at this moment seeing something so beautiful and doing what was my passion, I would be fine by that!

Lighting

Lighting can be very very dangerous but with the danger comes reward. Its so beautiful and in a blink of an eye can take your life. But that's what makes shots like these so cool to look at not many people are willing to go sit on the tallest hill with a single tree to get that special shot! BUT DO SO AT YOUR OWN RISK also tell people where you will be just in case you do get struck! Also have a radar and a time to keep getting in contact with someone who knows your out there. BE SAFE OUT THERE

Equipment

I used my trusty heavy and sturdy tripod to keep from getting any shaking in the shots, I used a Canon rebel t2i with a Tokina 11-16mm wide angle lens and a remote trigger to take pictures. I did have a rain cover but some how I didn't get rained on so I took it off.

Inspiration

I have always loved storms! I don't know what it is about them. I think it might be that its something so big that people cant control, but all they can do is sit there and watch, and I like showing others what kind of things are in nature that they normally don't get to see! I like getting unique shots but simple. one tree, one hill , Lots of light!

Editing

I did use starstax a free program to stack images over one another. This photo consist of 4 separate shots, after I compressed the images I later did post processing in light room which is a great, quick and simple editing program for photographers.

In my camera bag

I always have my 100-400mm lens on me for when I'm driving along and spot wildlife and usually have this lens on my canon 6D. If I see no wildlife but I do see a great landscape I get out my 16-28mm wide angle lens for those sweet wide angle shots! Another lens I have on me is a 28-135mm lens for shots I want to get a little closer on and don't want to distort much. On an every day basis this is my main lens I shoot with though! I also have a tripod on me at all times just in case I need to be extra steady. Tripods can make a world of difference along with a remote trigger its like Gold in low light situations. Also carry extra batteries, a rain cover, a remote trigger, and some macro lens attachments.

Feedback

Some advice I have is do what you feel is right to get that shot you want. It pays off in the long run and if you end up not stopping to get a shot you will regret it trust me. I have photo opportunities from 5 years ago that I wish I would have stopped for but didn't and still can think of them to this day! Go places others don't go because that's where you find the things that are very often unseen and beautiful. Always carry a tripod and always have your camera by you 24/7 you never know what will pop up. Storms come out of no where. Some things you will also need to do is long exposure with lighting so for this you will need a tripod and a camera that can do long exposure. I think these images were 15 to seconds of exposure which is letting all visible light into the cameras sensor for 15 -30 seconds my aperture was around f/11 which gives you a good depth of field and my ISO which mainly controls brightness in the shots was around 100. With these things it insures you get the right shots due to what kind of light is around you you might have to adjust a few of these things but for and average that should get you in the ball park. Keep adjusting tell you like whats showing up on your display screen! And that is how I got this photo! Thank you very much
