Behind The Lens

Location

Lofoten / Norway

Time

We have been a group of Swiss photographers that was travelling around the Lofoten Islands in February 2015. This was one of our favorite beaches. That day it was really stormy again and the air was moisty. I separated a bit from the group and went nearer towards this mountain. All of a sudden I discovered this mixture of ice and frozen sand. It was the perfect foreground to capture this arctic mood on this afternoon (2015/02/12; 4:14 pm).

Lighting

As it was a northern afternoon the light was already getting blueish. The light conditions fitted perfectly with the ice in the foreground.

Equipment

Nikon D800 on a tripod with the Nikkor 14-24mm/2.8 at 22mm and f/14. ISO 320. Lucroit ND 3.0 and 30sec.

Inspiration

I always was facinated by rough and frosty landscapes. That was one of the reasons to go to Norway during wintertime. The aim was to get the observer into this arctic mood.

Editing

Landscapes usually use post-processing. I always take them in RAW. To get this particular frosty mood I worked on the clouds and on the ice in the foreground. Additionally I had to turn down the whitebalance.

In my camera bag

Bodies: Nikon's D800 and D4s. When I leave from home I do not always know what is expecting me. With this two cameras I am well prepared for any situation. Lenses: Nikkor 14-24mm/2.8, Nikkor 24-70mm/2.8 and Sigma 70-200mm/2.8. I never go out without a set of ND and ND graduated filters, extra batteries, my tripod, two showercaps to protect the bodies if necessary and a rubber mat to be more comfortable on the ground.

Feedback

Be prepared for any conditions: it can be really cold and windy out there! So you have to be well organized. That means: you have to know which equipement you have in which pocket of your jacket and your bag. If you have to open every pocket your equipement is probably getting wet or blown away... Always have a warm drink with you! Be aware that light conditions can change very quickly, so know your camera by heart!
