The Death Valley salt pan is an amazing and incredibly barren location. The ground changes from razor sharp salt pinnacles to completely flat salt flats and everything in between, including these incipient mud polygons. The ground was moister here than in other locations, still holding water from previous rainfall (yea, I was amazed also to find out that it occasionally rains here). As the mud dries, the saturated salt water gets pulled to the surface, leaving it's dissolved mineral deposits behind.
