I turned my garage into a makeshift studio for this projectTime
Early evening. Since this kind of shot was being shot indoors in a dark environment, time of day doesn't really matter though.Lighting
Since I wanted to freeze the motion, I shot in the dark. I used a single flash, set to its lowest power setting, on a stand set about 3 feet away from the paint on the subwoofer.Equipment
I used a Nikon D5100 with a Nikkor 40mm macro lens sat on a Alta tripod. For the sound, I used a subwoofer with a piece of plastic wrap over it, hooked to a iPod that was playing music from Lindsey Stirling, this shot was created with her song "Song of the Caged Bird"Inspiration
I wanted to try something more abstract than what I normally do, I ended up on this idea after watching a video from the Slo Mo Guys on roosterteeth.com where they had done something similar for a video in slow motion.Editing
I cropped it and darkened the shadows slightly. In my camera bag
Since this shot, I have significantly changed my gear. I now carry a Nikon D850 with the 16-24, 24-70, and 70-200 2.8 lenses from Nikon. The rest is the normal odds and ends. Memory cards, batteries, gaff tape, multi tool, first aid kit, water, etc.Feedback
I originally tried this with blue and red paints with a white backdrop. I ended up switching it up to neon colors with a black backdrop. The blue and red simply didnt show up that well once the music started and the paint started to mix. You want to make sure you have some kind of protection on your camera too, nothing will ruin your day quicker than getting paint all over your lens, trust me on this.
