This is amazing, BUT, why not straighten it?
Dilleo22
Dilleo22 February 04, 2016
Thanks I tried lining it up with the horizon but it looked weird cause the beach and sand arent straight with the water in the distance. Its kinda hard. I just put it in lightroom to check if I missed it but its just weird to straighten it to much more.

You can always just warp that part in photoshop to make it straight without affecting any other part of the image

my thoughts are like the other comments, definitely straighten and ignore the beach, the horizon is where the action is.

I gotta agree about straightening. Screw the sand, everybody know the sea is level. Great shot, but the slight tilt to the left hurts it.

Behind The Lens

Location

This Photograph was taken off the shores of Myrtle Beach South Carolina.

Time

This Photograph was taken off the shores of Myrtle Beach South Carolina.

Lighting

Lighting can be very very dangerous but with the danger comes reward. Its so beautiful and in a blink of an eye can take your life. But that's what makes shots like these so cool to look at not many people are willing to go sit on the tallest hill with a single tree to get that special shot! BUT DO SO AT YOUR OWN RISK also tell people where you will be just in case you do get struck! Also have a radar and a time to keep getting in contact with someone who knows your out there. BE SAFE OUT THERE

Equipment

I used my trusty heavy and sturdy tripod to keep from getting any shaking in the shots, I used a Canon rebel Canon 6D with a Tokina 16-28mm wide angle lens and a remote trigger to take pictures.

Inspiration

I have always loved storms! I don't know what it is about them. I think it might be that its something so big that people cant control, but all they can do is sit there and watch, and I like showing others what kind of things are in nature that they normally don't get to see! After being on a week long business trip across part of the United states and ending in Myrtle Beach, south Carolina A Nebraskan boy like me wasnt used to such hot and humid weather and I was tired. But I couldn't sleep, As I was laying in bed I saw light flashing out side my hotel balcony window and lighting up the whole room. I thought it was a crazy party of some sort. But little did I know tell I looked out the window huge storm rolled in I went out on my 24th story hotel room balcony and started watching this storm slowly get closer over the ocean. so I ran inside grabbed my gear and started snapping shots! I stood out side for a good 3 hours. I couldn't believe how huge the lighting strikes were it blew me away! You get a rush every shot just, waiting to see your results on the LCD screen!

Editing

I did very little post processing in light room which is a great, quick and simple editing program for photographers. A just moved the highlights and shadows around alittle with some clarity and wabam!

In my camera bag

I always have my 100-400mm lens on me for when I'm driving along and spot wildlife and usually have this lens on my canon 6D. If I see no wildlife but I do see a great landscape I get out my 16-28mm wide angle lens for those sweet wide angle shots! Another lens I have on me is a 28-135mm lens for shots I want to get a little closer on and don't want to distort much. On an every day basis this is my main lens I shoot with though! I also have a tripod on me at all times just in case I need to be extra steady. Tripods can make a world of difference along with a remote trigger its like Gold in low light situations. Also carry extra batteries, a rain cover, a remote trigger, and some macro lens attachments.

Feedback

Some times luck is the main factor with shots like this, but you also need to have a verity of gear for all situations depending on your style of photography! Lens for low light, wide angle lens, a external trigger for shots on the tripod to make sure you get no shaking from clicking your cameras physical shutter button helps a lot and its nice not having to keep standing up to hit a button! But for this shot I used my Canon 6D with an external shutter button a nice heavy tripod and as for settings I was moving between 15 to 30 secs of exposure and an aperture of 5.6 with a low ISO of around 100-500 with my Tokina 16-28mm wide angle lens!
