Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my girlfriend's dining room, who now I am happy to call her my wife. She lives her life on Hope and Faith. So much so, she rescued two sick cats that should have passed away already but are going strong to this day. She named them Hope and Faith.

Time

I remember telling her that I wanted to get a photo of her tattoos and that I had a couple of ideas. That went on for a few months then finally one afternoon we sat down and started taking shots.

Lighting

The photo was taken at our dining room table and I didn't have any lighting set up so we were simply dealing with the typical house lighting. Because of that, I went with Black and White. I wanted the tattoos Faith and Hope to stand out more than anything.

Equipment

I have a Canon 5D MKII which is my only camera at the moment. Without going back into my files I believe I was using my Canon 50 MM lens that my dad had recently purchased and sent me. I ruined the standard lens I had while serving in Afghanistan and prior to this lens all I had was the Canon 70-200, so I was excited when he told me he was sending me this new lens. Since then my lens purchases are driving me wife crazy. I didn't use a flash or tripod at all. Simply stood on a chair behind my wife at the table with the dining room light on.

Inspiration

My wife's Hope and Faith inspired this photo 100%! I just wanted to capture a shot of that to be kept forever. This photo hags in our bedroom and a copy was also given to her mother who is in the late stages of Alzheimer's.

Editing

I did do some post-processing however I have to be honest, I am not a pro with photo shop so I cant explain what I do very well. This is one of my weaknesses when it comes to photography. I worked with many different variations to this photo. I wanted to background/table to be a bit blurry. Because it is kind of a fancy table it didn't quite fit the photo idea in my head. I also worked with the words on the Bible and how clear those were to be was actually a big deal. My wife had it open to one of her favorite scripts which I believe was John 3:16. But I ended kind of making the words not so clear as well. Not for any other reason than it just looked right as I was messing around. Everything else I couldn't tell you. I simply played with the photo until I saw what I like.

In my camera bag

I have my Canon 5D MKII along with a Canon 7-200 mm lens. I have the Canon 50 mm used for this photo, a Tamron 90 mm macro lens, and a Tamron 150-600 mm lens as well. I have 1 tripod (nothing fancy), 1 monopod, and my pro master camera bag which was a birthday gift from my wife.

Feedback

The only advice I can give is if you have a vision in your mind for a photo you want to create, don't let it go and don't quite until you have it.
