Beautiful shot. So unusual with the light illuminating the birds from below.

Love the image and the colour moody and fresh! The wings in a great position and reflections artistic. Have the birds flying into the frame maybe not centred.

Location
Lower Douglas Lake at Fort Knox, KentuckyTime
Late evening during the end of the golden hourLighting
It's all about getting lucky during the golden hour. Those last beams of low sunlight can be GOLDEN in many ways.Equipment
Canon 5D Mark III EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6LInspiration
This was just a right place right time photo which is most all of wildlife photography, well true wildlife photography and not the staged rescue/rehab shoots. From the day before I knew the geese pairs flew off the lake in the evening so I setup hoping to get something like this and it happened.Editing
None other than a small crop.In my camera bag
EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L but wish I had 800 for wildlifeFeedback
If you go to the same location a lot you can sort of try to predict wildlife behavior but best advice is just get out there and enjoy Mother Nature.
