Location
This photograph was taken on an 8,000 foot mesa. The panoramic Colorado Rocky Mountains provided a wonderful backdrop.Time
I arrived on the mesa in the early dawn. I searched on foot for a couple of hours before having the good fortune of finding these three mustangs in the early morning summer light.Lighting
The early morning light created a rich, warm light for this photograph and provided a nice contrast against the Colorado blue sky.Equipment
This photograph was taken with a Canon 5D Mark lll with a Canon 100-400 ll lensInspiration
I am creating a series on Wild Horses in New Mexico and Colorado and was hoping to find some wild horses on this journey. I drove from Santa Fe New Mexico to Wild Horse Mesa in Colorado in the dark to arrive at first light. I hiked in to the mesa for two hours before finding these two wild mustangs. I do not always locate the mustangs, but with a little perseverance I was able to locate these three on this day.Editing
I do most of my post-processing in Camera Raw and use Photoshop for minor adjustments. In my camera bag

Research where the wild horse territories are located. Try to be there in early morning light or late evening light when the horses are more active. Walk in quietly and approach the horses slowly. Always respect the animals and keep your distance. Having a long telephoto lens will help. Shoot at the high shutter speed to have a sharp image. With perseverance and being there in good light can offer a great chance to capture a wonderful moment.
