Location
This photograph of two wild horses hiding in the forest was taken on Ponderosa Mesa, a remote area at 8,000 feet in northern New Mexico.Time
The drive to this remote area is many hours from any city or town. I usually drive up in the dark, in the early morning hours in order to get there to catch the soft early light. It usually takes many additional hours of walking on the mesa before finding this band of wild horses. On this particular day, it took several hours of walking to find the horses. When I did finally have the good fortune to see them and take this photo, it was late afternoon. This band ran deep into the forest as soon as they saw me, but this stallion and mare circled around, snorting and then paused to peer at me through the trees. It was at this moment that I was graced to get this image.Lighting
The light was beautiful warm late fall light. The light was striking through the forest and lighting up the sides of the horses, trees, and yellow grasses. This added depth and richness to the overall image.Equipment
This image was shot with a Canon 5D Mark lll, using a Canon 100-400mm ll lens, made at 400mm.Inspiration
I am currently creating a photo series on Wild Horses in the west. I travel to many remote areas in New Mexico and Colorado to try to locate these elusive creatures. It is magical to find these animals in their natural environment.Editing
I shoot all raw images and then start processing in Camera Raw. I utilize Photoshop to correct color, saturation, and open shadows, and also use tools in Photoshop to keep highlights from washing out.In my camera bag
In may camera bag I have a Canon 5D Mark lll, Canon 100-400mm ll lens, a Canon 24-105mm lens, and a Canon speed light.Feedback
Photographing wild animals in the wild is a joy, yet it requires diligence and patience. It is crucial to get to know the nature of your subject, where they travel, to be quiet, and to have a long lens ready.
