Behind The Lens

Location
This image was taken on Wild Horse Mesa under the Rocky Mountian Range.
Time
I awoke at 4:00 am knowing I had to drive 2 1/2 hours in order to reach the Wild Horse Mesa at sunrise on this July morning. I hiked in over two hours before coming across these three spectacular, healthy, wild mustangs. They were there on a small hill above me, with the the magnificent backdrop of the Rocky Mountains. As I approached, they paused for a moment to observe me, then galloped off into the morning light.
Lighting
The early light of the sky was a soft blue and the morning sun was burning off the clouds. The light over the mountains illuminated the left side of their bodies, creating a magical contrast of light and shadow.
Equipment
This image was shot with a Canon 5D Mark III with a Canon 100-400mm II lens.
Inspiration
I set out on this day in July, hoping to get another rare opportunity to photograph the mustangs...their freedom and their being, for me, is all that is needed to inspire. Each and every time I have the chance to share their presence is an inspiration.
Editing
Yes, I shoot all RAW images and start my post-processing in Camera Raw then move into Photoshop. I added contrast, vibrance and sharpening to the image.
In my camera bag
In my camera bag I have a Canon 5D Mark III, Canon 100-400mm lens, and Canon 24-105 lens. I also carry a Canon Speedlight, and small Canon G16.
Feedback
My best advice on photographing wild horses is to walk quietly and slowly, be patient and take a long lens.
