Beautiful scene. The human element really shows the enormity of the waterfall. Well done.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on a weeklong trip to Iceland with my best friend. It took me at least ten tries to get this photo because of the serious wind and mist coming from the waterfall, the camera and lens would get soaked in seconds. Wiping it down was a chore but well worth it!

Time

There was nothing extraordinary about the lighting that day but that’s okay because this waterfall is generally very photogenic as it is usually shadowed by the surrounding cliffs. This shadowing allows for even and beautiful lighting all day long.

Lighting

The lighting was perfect for what I was trying to achieve but the only thing that would make this picture better, in my opinion, would be to capture a sun flare over the cliffs above the waterfall. It would definitely add a bit more interest to an already incredible landmark.

Equipment

This was shot on a Nikon d750 with a Sigma 24mm Art Lens. That lens never leaves the body, it is such a perfect lens with minimal distortion and easily fixable vignetting.

Inspiration

My biggest inspiration was actually a very similar photograph taken by a fellow Instagram photographer who goes by the name @chrispoops. I actually won his picture through an Instagram giveaway and I just fell in love with this waterfall. Getting this picture was the inspiration for the whole trip. We ended up visiting this waterfall three times in one week!

Editing

It was very a very quick and easy edit! Some dehazing was necessary due to the surrounding mist. A few minor curve adjustments and HSL corrections were needed as well, all done in Lightroom.

In my camera bag

I’m a very simple landscape photographer, all I need is my Nikon d750 (terrific for instances where a high ISO is needed) along with my handy Sigma 24mm Art Lens. I also usually travel with a tripod strapped to my pack, you never know when you’ll need to use it!

Feedback

Honestly, capturing this waterfall was not too difficult, technically speaking. If you want to capture the water cascading the way I did, bump up your ISO and that shutter speed and decrease your aperture. Frame your subject in the lower middle quadrant, get as close as you dare and press that shutter. You really can’t go wrong with this incredible masterpiece! But no promises that you won’t get as soaked as I did!
