Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken outside of Ennis Texas during the spring while all the wildflowers are blooming! I am a self taught photographer who loves getting great images of families together, but the other part of me is drawn to nature and its beauty!

Time

I took this image within an hour and 1/2 before the sun went down. I always like to go out to the wildflower fields at times when no one else is there. This was just after a rain so I knew there would be no one out there. Most people want to go out when it is bright and sunny, however the best time to capture images outside are on overcast days. The light is diffused and not harsh.

Lighting

This image was shot in natural light out in the field of wildflowers right after a rain. It was overcast so I was getting nice even light.

Equipment

Canon EOS 5D Mark II with a EF 100mm macro IS L 2.8, handheld with natural light.

Inspiration

I was out shooting wildflower in the spring here in Texas. The field I was in had a mixture of bluebonnets and Indian Paintbrushes. That color mixture together makes for some stunning images. However as I was walking around through the flowers the softness of this one particular Indian Paintbrush caught my attention.

Editing

The only post-processing on this image was some cropping and a little sharpening and then added a haze overlay with a lowered opacity.

In my camera bag

In my camera bag I have the Canon 5D Mark II, the EF 100mm macro f2.8 L IS, a Canon 50mm f1.4, two Canon 600ex-rt speedlites and the Canon Speedlite Transmitter ST-E3-RT.

Feedback

When you go out try to not follow the crowd. Try and look at things from a different angle. Get low, get high and look around for something different than what everyone else is shooting. Shoot close up and far away. Shoot with the sun to your back or shoot into the sun. Get creative and don't just stand there. I have often just walked out in my backyard and looked around and shot some pretty amazing images. Keep shooting.
