Location
Pencarrow lighthouse on Wellingtons south coast, It's on the eastern side of the harbor entrance.Time
This was pretty late in the evening around 11.30pm my friend and I had been out shooting since sunset, this was one of the last few frames i tookLighting
The lighting was mostly from the lighthouse with a red and white light flashing every 15 seconds so shooting double at 30 seconds gave plenty of foreground lightingEquipment
This image was taken on Canons 6D with the Samyang 14mm f2.8 set at f4 . Manfroto carbon fiber tripod and ballheadInspiration
I have only just started dabbling with steel wool so this was the third time I had tried it i really love the challenges of trying new photography techniques this is one that i really enjoyed. The dynamic light coming from steel wool is just awesome.Editing
Processing was just lowering the highlights and upping the shadows a little with the usual lens correction with the big 14mm really need to even out the distortion. In my camera bag
In my camera bagThis question is a "heavy" one. I carry a lot of stuff i like being prepared for a quick change if scenery or plan . In my camera bag i have my two bodies the Canon 6D and 5DSR, Canon 70/200 L f2.8 i like for doing some nice tight landscape shots , Canon 24/70 f2.8 normally use this one for general purpose great lens. Samyang 14mm f2.8 is my go to wide angle lens i use this 80% of the time great affordable lens Samyang 24mm f1.4 great for really dark places really handy. Canon 50mm f1.4 i don't use this as much as i should it's another great light gathering lens.. two tripods carbon manfroto 055 and ballhead x2 Genie mini great for adding some dynamic movement to time lapse Two shutter releases cables for everything. Most the time I'll have my tablet as well as DJI Mavic Pro . All packed into the Mindshift 40L Firstlight. And lighting, headlamp torch and normally assorted batteries for everythingFeedback
Experiment have fun try something new there is no reason to not, photography is all about trying new things techniques and never stop learning. Steel wool is very bright so lower iso helps even out the image. Most of all keep trying there is no failing if your foreground is too dark try stacking a bright foreground with the underexposed one to bring out the details and even the overall image.. happy shooting
