Behind The Lens

This photo was taken around the southern coast of Wellington New Zealand near baring head lighthouse it was a just over a hour to walk to this location from the car park on the other side of the hill
I shot this image just after 1am
The lighting was mostly from the lighthouse and the glow from the city lights a few kilometers away, the mixture of light helped illuminate the clouds for that extra little bit of dramatic scenery
The camera i use for my night photography is a Canon 6D, the 14mm Samyang manual lens was set at f4, i used a high iso of 6400 on this image to gather as much as i could from the scene. My go to tripod is the Manfrotto MT055CXPRO 4 Section Carbon Tripod very sturdy platform to shoot from. The manfrotto 057 ballhead is extremely precise and strong .
The time of year down at this location is key for gathering great foreground the milky way lower in the sky can make for some beautiful sights
The processing was pretty minimal on this image, lens correction, a little on the shadows and then some noise reduction.. I try to set my shots up so there will be minimal work needed to have the finished product
In my camera bag
Oh, my bag well i shoot primarily night but do a lot of sunset/sunrise so i have a combination of gear, i normally have the Canon 5DSR, Canon 70-200 f2.8 , Canon 24-70 f2.8 , my astro work is mostly on the Samyang prime lenses i use the 14mm f2.8 and the 24mm f1.4 The Canon 50mm f1.4 is a great little lens . Then all the other gear like the syrp gine mini , mavic pro drone.. 6 batteries for the cameras normally have my tablet in my bag too
Just keep going out and shooting is the only advice i can give. I have learned photography literally by just going out and shooting i have never had lessons of courses. I just go and shoot... focus is key at night its harder to get and easier to loose. Get and shoot over time it gets easier, enjoy it
