Behind The Lens
Location
This is inside a cargo-trailer in the parade line up at the Victoria Pride Parade in 2017.Time
Parade started at 11am, this picture was taken about half an hour before the start.Lighting
Lighting was a little tough because in the trailer I would normally want to use a flash with a diffuser, but being a sunny Sunday in July, I hadn't thought of bringing my flash.Equipment
This was taken with my old Canon 400D, hand-held with a 28mm-200mm lens, pulled right back to the 28mm.Inspiration
I was walking the line of the Pride Parade while they're waiting for the parade to start and taking pictures of all the incredible creative people. Anytime I'd see someone that looked interesting, I'd ask if I could take their picture. When I approached her from behind it was the Victoria Secret style wings that had caught my attention. I took 17 frames of her as she just kept posing and dancing to the beat that the DJ behind her was spinning. This was actually the last of the 17 frames.Editing
Some of the objects in the background were turned to black-and-white, so as to remove the distraction of their presence. I also used a light reversal layer to make the model and the DJ pop out from the background. In my camera bag
I think that in 2017 I took only the camera that I had with the one lens, made movement through the crowd that much easier.Feedback
Be Friendly: Ask politely before shooting, and that them for their time. Be Accepting: Accept them for who they are, and accept when some may say no. Be Welcoming: Welcome their ideas for poses and others in the shots. Be Aware: People are setting up and getting them and their floats/cars/groups ready don't interfere with their process. Be Thankful: Thank them for their time.
