Behind The Lens

Location

We took this photo in our master bathtub which is a standard sized, oval shape. Luckily the colors we used didn't stain haha.

Time

I want to say it was middle of the night after work. We work in a show so it was sometime after midnight.

Lighting

The lighting is very basic in every sense of the word haha. I used one speed light with an umbrella modifier positioned directly over the subject's face.

Equipment

I used a Canon T5i (my only camera body) with a kit 18-55mm lens that came with the camera body. I'm sure all the photo tech guys are going to love that haha. The flash used was a Yongnuo IV speed light with an umbrella light modifier. I think the brand is LS Studio.

Inspiration

So, my inspiration came from two sources. The first was from various bathtub photos I came across browsing Instagram. I wanted to try, but didn't know how quite yet. The other was from an album cover from a group called Traces. That's where I got the idea for the red veil and fabric.

Editing

I did! I used various retouching techniques learned from YouTube videos (Phlearn) to clear up the skin and give the color an overall extra "pop" obviously trying to not overdo it.

In my camera bag

In my bag I have my camera, my kit lens, a 10-22mm sigma wide angle, a canon 50mm f 1.4, memory cards, extra batteries, lens cleaners, wireless remotes. All that along with stands, lights and modifiers. I get my workout in moving that stuff around.

Feedback

I would say, be open to creativity! Don't copy, but be inspired to recreate what he photo makes you feel or to remake the overtone of the image or whatever you see that gets your mind going. Learning technical stuff helps you solve problems during a shoot, but the magic happens in your mind's eye. Do some test shots to get the tech down before the actual shoot. Once you have that and it's time, just play around and have fun with it. I had no idea how this photo would turn out, I just wanted to mix two ideas together and I was fortunate enough to have others enjoy it just as much as I do. That's what makes a great photo in my opinion.
